SF was created and developed by Bill White, author of the FalcCalc utilities. Strategic Falcon is a F3 add on tool that gives you incredible control over most all aspects of a campaign and/or any missions generated in it. At a strategic level you can change the "victory" and "defeat" nodes, change occupation of any site, change the level and/or type of individual units at any site (i.e. specify exactly how may SA-6, SA-7, etc). At the mission level you have complete control over all allied AND enemy flights (except randoms). You can control/add/delete allied/enemy flights, aircraft types, waypoints, etc and control/add/delete allied/enemy ground forces down to specifying number and type of each individual unit. The whole utility is presented through a very slick new graphical interface with a wonderful graphical theater map for planing and control. SF currently works only on Falcon campaigns (not Mig nor Hornet) versions 3.01.1 through 3.04. Future versions are expected to for Mig and Hornet campaigns. Strategic Falcon will be a big plus for the serious Campaigners on this list. It should be released within the next couple of weeks. Last I heard the 'Suggested Retail Price' would be in the $25-$29US range (I think a discounted price will be available for registered FalcCalc users), but don't quote me. For the real scoop, contact the author Bill White at: 74650.746@CompuServe.com and ask for the complete product description and product pricing. (FYI, neither I nor the 510th have any financial interest in this product). Enjoy. - Larry Bain 510th TFW Club - Squadron Scribe and SA-7 Collector ------------------------------- From: DECvp our highest volume product Subject: OFT and Falcon 3.0E A while back I thought I saw a note about a person having difficulty installing OFT on falcon 3.0E. Well a friend of mine bought it and while the OFT installation says it installs, CHECKOFT says it's not installed, the screen comes up with the OFT artwork and version 3.01.1 but none of the OFT campaigns are there. A number of other minor nits seem to be about but I'm not certain if these relate. If there's anyone who knows how to pull this off please let me know. Posting to the digest or e-mail would be great thanks dave ------------------------------- From: Jonathan Roach Subject: CW vs Pulse Radar avoidance As an aeronautics/avionics student and a keen Falcon 3 player I can give you an answer to the above question straight out of my revision notes which are in front of me as I write! 8^> The answer may not be true in "real life" since this is only the theory of radar rather than the practice 8^< ,and although I haven't tried this yet in "Falcon life" I'll describe my experiences so far.. CW radar -------- So-called CW-doppler radar beams a continous signal at a target rather than a series of pulses. A reflection from a target undergoes a frequency shift (Doppler shift) which is higher or lower than the transmit freq. depending on direction of travel, and proportional to the radial speed wth respect to the transmitter. This shifted signal can be detected at the radar site, but detection becomes progrssively harder as the frequency shift decreases. It isn't possible to detect a zero frequency shift since the transmitted and received signals are at exactly the same frequency. Hence if you fly perpendicularly to the radar beam, the radial velocity will be zero, there will be zero frequency shift, and you will be undetected! When flying over a radar-infested area (been to Punta del Cortesa recently?), I've never seen a code 1 or code 3 radar on my TWI at more than about 70 degs to my flight path. Coincidence? Pulse-Doppler ------------- This works by sending out a pulse signal, and sweeping the frequency of the signal up (or down) over the pulse duration. Acoustically, this might sound like the first part of a wolf-whistle (try it !!!). The upshot of all this is that it is possible to detect moving targets by the Doppler effect, and also static targets from the return time of the echo pulse. However, all this comes at a price - at certain ranges, you cannot be detected. I can't really explain this without some fancy graphics, but for those with an interest in signal processing: The transmitted signal s(t) = A rect (t/tp) cos(wt + b (t squared)) where tp is the pulse length and w is the carrier freq.; b=const. In the freq. domain this appears as a pair of approx rectangular functions centred on the + - carrier freqs. The autocorrelation function is "sine x / x" modulated by cos wt so there are zeros (range ambiguities) at points corresp. to n * pi / (b * tp). What all this means in the Falcon world is that, if this effect is modelled, you will always be detected by Doppler shift (beaming the sites will help), but even when you beam the sites, you may or may not be detected by the pulses, depending on range from the site, altitude, clutter etc. Hence to beat a pulse- doppler radar, fly perp. to the radar beam, and low as you dare... Gotta go home now and try this out - Jon (Atropos) Roach ------------------------------- From: Jonathan Roach Subject: UK users Bad News -------- MicroProse, the UK importers of SH software, is that they no longer import OFT, and will not import Hornet, which contains a Bosnia scenario, on grounds of taste (as if killing Columbians, Cubans, Iraqis, Syrians, Russians, Koreans, Indians and Libyans is morally acceptable!) Good News --------- The good news is that after three phone calls to SH in the States (don't ever let the put you on hold - they forget about you and lose the call!) and two to MicroProse in the UK, I discovered on buying a 3.95 magazine that all the F3 add-ons are still available on grey import from Strategic Plus Software in Twickenham. Service in about 3 days. Disclaimer ---------- I, Jonathan Roach, have no commercial, social, aeronautical or other contract with Strategic Plus Software of Twickenham, UK and am not acting as a paid advertiser, etc. etc..
