"Martin J. Smallridge" Subject: Hornet wingmen and landing/bolter???? Oh boy, hopefully it doesn't seem like I'm bitching and moaning my life away or anything but I've found something pretty annoying with regard to my Hornet wingmen. Specifically their apparent inability to slam the throttle to the stops and go back around for another try when they miss the wires. Instead I watch them in total frustration as a pilot decide to sit there dumb and leave his engines at zero whilst he rolls leisurely off the deck. Once a pilot actually survived this only to then knock his throttle open whilst 'floating' and proceed to crash with the carrier. Thus I lost not only the plane but also the pilot (KIA). Another thing, which I won't complain about too much, as it works in my favour, is the odd occasion when a wingman catches the wire and then rolls to the storage position, only to go over the edge (something all of them seem to be about to do). the crazy thing is that he sits there watching the carrier steams away and when it comes to the report screen, I discovered that he was active and that I hadn't lost the plane either. Weird!! Incidentally the settings were at 1* for the Scale and I had changed it right at the beginning of the mission. Other details were... Hornet ver1.01 386 computer 1meg RAM overall (624k free) Joystick control (not that it mattered as I was 'dead' when I watched the wingmen land) Theatre: Panama As an aside has anyone actually seen a wingman fold his wings. They never hit anyway. :-( - -- George Sobala ------------------------------- From: "Martin J. As a matter of interest did anyone buy it ... is it really available ... >does it have the Bosnia Campaign? >JAMES Well James, after all the pleas I was making for Hornet I guess I was one of the obvious choices for people wanting to buy Hornet. I did get it and sadly for now I have been pretty annoyed and delighted with it. Part of that is due to the limitations of the machine I'm using it on, but a lot to do with the following pitfalls.... 1.As mentioned before, my wingmen don't know how to 'Bolter' when they miss catching a wire when landing. 2.There is a LOT of hard disk access compared to Falcon 3.04 and that includes most annoyingly, when I switch views to avoid a SAM. 3.Wingmen that are incredible chickens (hopefully this will dissappear as a problem when I get the utilities to make them perfect.) 4.The manual, as I note somone else mentioned, is sparse and there's a distinct lack of energy gone into this like providing other aircraft of the naval type ie: E-2 Hawkeyes, A-6 Intruders and possible jammer support from Prowlers. To tell the truth it does look suspiciously like SH were playing with something and decided to release it without really finishing the job properly ie: without those extra planes, a whole task force, a decent manual. If anything points to this more it's the fact that the program hasn't appeared in their advertising pamphlet whereas A-10 Warthog has. Having said all that I do enjoy the program and wish that I had a better machine to make a few of the problems less obvious, but having gone back to Falcon again I find that much more enjoyable at the moment. If someone would add the appropriate aircraft, fleet (to a degree) and deal with those wingmen bolter/cowardice problems then I would be telling my grandmother to buy it, but as it stands I think Mig29 has more to offer. By the way, if you are still intereted in buying it, then there are two places that have it either in stock or are placing orders. These are: Strategic Plus 081-977-8088 Computermate 0707-875757 Please note that those are the only two I know about personally in the UK so don't hold me responsible if there are others (Disclaimer). The price is around #35.99 give or take a pound, so it isn't cheap. Oh and yes it does have Bosnia campaign on it also. Well it's just an opnion so please don't take it any other way but can someone please give serious consideration to improving Hornet in the ways mentioned, it would certainly make a major positive difference to Hornet, for me at least. Happy Trails, Martin ------------------------------- From: "Martin J. Smallridge" Subject: A-10 Yes, I know this is rather early to be asking questions about this add-on after having barely got Hornet through the door and onto the computer but I have to ask... Will A-10 be out sometime soon, ie: is there a date that looks likely, as for whether it will be available for use in the UK, well I think that will propbably be a forgone conclusion after the Hornet problems. As I recall, A10 has been put on indefinite hold. No code has been cut for it at all (save a few experimental things?) The killing knife was the F3 graphics engine which could not deal with the needed ground detail. So if I recall, the post said the idea was shelved. Don't know what else SH has in mind, but I think I remember hearing F 4.0 was the next big thing coming out. This time next year or later? I have no idea whatever happened to Apache. Again this all from memory. Gerald, Art of the Kill covers Basic Flight Maneuvers (BFM) training. Pete Bonanni explains all this stuff showing you actual screen shots of Falcon3 and giving examples using 2 planes on a stick pointing them in every direction depending on what the explanation is for. If you think this might help you get a better idea on ACM training, then check it out! also you might see me sitting in the audience ;) Gabe Turk. ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 5 : Issue 91 ]]
