The Aim 9m and 9p (and 9l) are heat seeker. Once launched they go after the heat source via an infrared sensor and thus they do not need assistance from the host aircraft. Hint, when the radar is turned on, the seeker head is slaved to the radar. If you are in a fur ball, switch off the radar and the seeker heads wil acquire a target themselves without the need for you to coral the target with radar. The AMRAMM (Aim 120) uses an active radar, and thus it tracks on its own. The Aim 120 is a replacement for the AIM 7 (Sparrow) which tracked on the reflected energy of the host aircraft. That is, you had to maintain a lock on the bogey for the Sparrow to home in on. Thus, the AIM 120 and all Air to Air missiles in Falcon3 and OFT are fire and forget. Watch your drink! Running the medium or complex flight model I am having lots of trouble doing a smooth landing. I can land easily without the simulation complaining that I have crashed, but I my eyes my landing is way too harsh in terms of vertical velocity. I would like to be as gentle on the gear as a commercial craft. It also lets me run into the dirt at Nellis, is this normal? My problem is mainly trying to get the angle of attack high enough without stalling. The plane seems have very unstable pitch and horizontal velocity at low speeds (as you might expect ;-). When landing is there an optimum speed, decent ratio, throttle setting and flap/brake setting for weight (like the cards on a commercial jet). I use about 40% throttle with flaps and end up with the speed just below 150 knots on my final decent. On another note. I have a CH flight stick with a 33 MHz 486sx using the soundblaster card. Has anybody changed the pots in the flightstick to get better sensitivity? The throttle is almost useless and I was thinking of putting a slider pot in a box. Has anybody done this? ------------------------------- From: Gabriel_Turk@tcenter.jn.tsoft.net (Gabriel Turk) Subject: Re: Cranked arrow J> From: jay.lee@msbbs.mn.org (Jay Lee) J> J> read of the 'XL, it was shelved in favour of the F15SE. Unfortunate. Am I J> only one that would like to see the 'XL model'd in a sim? (Gabe, y'listenin J> heh) Maneouverability is fantastic; you can 'slew' the nose quite a few Nope, I'm reading ;-> ... seriously, I have no control on that part, but, tell you what? I got a partial solution for you. Did you try Flight Sim Toolkit? Domark did a great job on this one, you can build your XL now and fly it anywhere you want. Last I heard from Domark is that they are including a bunch of new terrains so all you have to do is click and choose where you want to fly. With the Hornet problems - a SH rep first said that the exception 12 and 13's I was getting with EMM386 and Qemm may be cause if I was using smartdrv without the /X option. Then later, that same rep says that I shouldn't use smartdrv at all. Has anyone had problems using Hornet with Smartdrv? How deep in the Hornet Campaign are you? Thanx. -The Doctor ------------------------------- From: "Williams, Pete" Subject: RE: newbie having problems landing >Running the medium or complex flight model I am having lots of trouble >doing a smooth landing. I would like to be as gentle on the gear as a commercial It also lets me run into the dirt at Nellis, is this normal? I think F3 (and a lot of other sims as well) cut you a *big* break in vertical velocity at touchdown. I agree with you that I would have expected damage form some of my 'good' landings. And I would also imagine that landing an F-16 anywhere than a runway would be a disaster.. >When landing is there an optimum speed, decent ratio, throttle setting and >flap/brake setting for weight (like the cards on a commercial jet). >I use about 40% throttle with flaps and end up with the speed just below 150 >knots >on my final decent. Sounds good to me. BTW, does anybody find that flaps increase lift in F3? To me, they just add drag with no increase in lift (i.e., they don't cause me to balloon). >On another note. Open up your stick and take out the 'clicker'; this should help your throttle control quite a bit. Pete Williams ------------------------------- From: "Martin J. Smallridge" Subject: F3.04 (bug) resend Oh, well it had to end sooner or later. I hate to say it but I've found a bug in Mig 29.02 (or whatever version happens to be the latest on the FTP sites) It all has to do with the padlock view... let me explain (what the heck does elucidate mean anyhow?? ).... Flying along with the cannon mission loaded up for Mig Red Flag practice mission. Slowly approaching the target with cannon set to ACAN. Fine no problem. So now I switch to Padlock and turn on the helmet Sight (I'm not sure if the helmet sight has any relevance to the bug). Ooops the C130's are not quite where I want them so I adjust my bearing and attitude... This is where it goes *ack*, The HUD shows that I am moving vertically but the target cue is not moving until suddenly it jumps. No amount of gentle adjustment makes any difference, it just doesn't do anything for about 20 degrees of pulling back on the stick then jumps. It is impossible to bring the gun to bear on the target in this mode. So I switched to regular View and blasted away then. I realise in itself that it's hardly critical but it does mean that I am losing sight and just when I am getting used to padlock view at last it's not helping. other news: I love the idea of a helmet mounted sight, works wonders in setting up missiles. PS: Has anyone noticed what has happened to the Chad Campaign in the FTP sites as it seems to have dissappeared. Also will there be a patch for it for Falcon 3.04 or the other add-on's in the near future for the version that used to appear for 3.01 and lower, it looked good so far. Well that's it for now, thanx all. Happy Trails Martin ------------------------------- From: "Martin J. Smallridge" Subject: FCU, MCU, HCU and Falcalc (Hmm) FCU: I've heard very little about this FCU. MCU and HCU althought there is a patch available for it on the FTP sites. Can anyone give me a honest rundown as to what these utilities do and whether it is worth actually buying it or settling for a shareware type thing such as FCE?? FALCALC: I am definitely interested in getting this but I'm running F3.04 and can't see the point in loading it up as the shareware version is still down in the lower versions and I have to switch machines quite often. (I'm using a friends). This would pretty much invalidate any registration number I might get. If possible can someone get back to me and let me know if it is possible to register regardless and also whether it is possible to pay by credit card, as overseas checks tend to a real pain in the proverbial butt. A review on this prog's performance would also be appreciated. Thanks people...
