So considering the speed the sound to be a constant >above a certain altitude is a big simplification. Just consider the limit: in >space there is no atmosphere, so no speed of sound :-). Whoa, hold on a sec! Time for a little gas dynamics refresher course! For an ideal gas, the speed of sound is given by: a = (gamma*R*T)^0.5 where gamma is the ratio of specific heats (1.4 for a diatomic, 1.67 for a monatomic gas), R is the universal gas constant divided by the molecular weight and T is temperature. Density is NOT a factor, strange as it may seem. Sound speed is a fcn of altitude only in that T is a fcn of altitude. Well, the molecular composition may change a smidgen as you get some atoms at higher altitudes. But that's way high, and also a miniscule effect. The standard atm has T at a constant -69.7F from 36K to about 66K ft (unless the standard has changed), so for this range, sound speed is also a constant (968 ft/s). >Anyway this brings me to my question: How is the performance of a plane rated? >In view of the above it is obvious that a mach number is pretty meaningless >without additional information like (first and foremost) the altitude. Does, Stuart, I'm sure, will answer this better than I ever could. But mach no isn't meaningless by any means. For gas dynamic effects, it is a lot more meaningful than velocity. Density, velocity, temperature, and P changes across normal shocks are determined by the inlet mach number. Ditto for these variables in many other flow types. These all come into play in determining flight and engine characteristics. Take it away Stuart... Dave masten@beta.lanl.gov ------------------------------- From: wahi0001@gold.tc.umn.edu Subject: polymap.zip Howdy. I recently got the first release of my IA/RF Theatre re-map programme finished, and sent to onion.rain.com as 'polymap.zip' in /pub/falcon3/incoming. Included in the zip file are the executable, C source code (pretty ragged at this point), and a small document file, which will be appended to this list. *NOTE* This is the first release of polymap, and there are a number of documented 'oddities', and surely a few 'undocumented' ones. If you notice bugs, have a suggestion, complaint or a question, I'm looking for response. Send any mail to me at 'jay.lee@msbbs.mn.org'. POLYMAP.DOC follows ------------------- Polymap Polymap is a shareware utility that allows you to re-map Red Flag and Instant Action theatres from the default of Nellis and Kuwait. Polymap works with Falcon3, MiG29, and Hornet. All versions of MiG29 and Hornet are supported. Falcon versions F3.02 through F3.04 are supported. When mapping Hornet Red Flag theatres, the file "NELLIS.MSF" is copied to the new theatre. i.e., if you re-map RF for India, "NELLIS.MSF" is copied to "INDIA.MSF". I'm not positive just what the .MSF file DOES, but Hornet won't function without it. You'll notice that the any theatre that is re-mapped for Red Flag will not be available for regular missions while it is mapped for RF. I'm not sure the extent of this; it MAY not interfere with running campaigns, and it might not be applicable to all three executables. This is the first release of Polymap. It DOES modify the executable. Backing up FALCON3.EXE, MIG29.EXE, and HORNET.EXE would be a prudent idea. Polymap was designed under Turbo-C V2.0. The source is included; keep in mind that this is the first version, and I haven't 'prettied' the code up any. If you discover bugs, inconsistencies, or have suggestions, I can be reached at "JAY.LEE@MSBBS.MN.ORG". Its got to have the mechanical I'll throw my puny hat into the ring as well. _The Great Book of Modern Warplanes_ gives a good deal of info the F-15 CAS, and the fact that the aircraft is fully flyable with the CAS disengaged. Stuart has told me before that it handles like crap then, but in the _GBOMW_ the first pilots that flew the F-15 thought it flew exceptionally well without the CAS and downright incredible with it. Of course, that was 20 some odd years ago. My how time flies :-) (pun intended) But, more conclusive that _GBOMW_ I offer _Jane's Avionics 1990-91_. This tome has different sections for radar, ecm, flight control, etc, etc. It has two separate flight control sections, one called Control Augmentation Systems (ie, CAS) and the other is Fly By Wire Systems. The F-15[A-E] are all referenced under the CAS section. I figure if the folk's at Jane's thought it important enough to warrant this distinction then there must indeed be a serious distinction. This always gives me NWS damage indicated, but when I try to lower the undercarriage, I get no response. Is this normal? should I just RTFM minimum bombing height. 2. UH60's I am playing the Pakistan scenario. I have this rule, it goes like this - any aircraft that refuses to let me lock onto it is an enemy. For some reason I cannot lock onto UH60's. The choppers continually frustrate radar lock and IFF. This must freak pilots in a real battle, as they constantly try to identify an unknown aircraft. I have a similar problem with stealth fighters, but I can understand that. 3. Is there a falconr for the latest Falcon.(3.03?). 4. Having played mig29 only a little, I am very dissapointed by the bombing method. Is this really accurate, or is it a little commie bashing by SH. I also find the mig29 unplayable due to trim problems. Without trying, I can get precision down to about 1.5% with the throttle wheel of my FSPro. With a bit of effort, I can set the throttle to just about any percentage I desire. This fine control makes carrier landings much easier. Speaking of carrier landings, I must have just been whining before when I complained about how difficult they became in Hornet 1.01. I've since nailed three traps in a row on the first pass with two good and one fair rating. I just had to learn to be extremely careful with the stick. Setting the deadzone down to 5% with TM-STICK helped a lot also.
