Korhonen said about radar avoidance difficulties, that the enemy will also get a radar lock on you (ok, and so can you on them) through mountains. I've been jumped upon by MiGs dozens of times flying in a river valley (at approximately 1000' AGL. The mountains on either side were more than 5000' high) solo with radar off-line. However, I have been able to avoid enemy interceptors by flying very low (at approximately 250'). I set up a Red Flag mission in which I fled a bombing site at 650-700 kts at 250' and pitted up 4 MiG-29s, 2 MiG-31s and 2 UMFs to search for me along my escape route. While most of them noticed and fired upon me, not one of them ever hit me (I didn't even have to use ECM or chaff). I don't know whether this is because of my low altitude (missiles lost me in the ground clutter?) or my high speed, but it worked, time after time (I flew the mission with Elite enemy pilots for 6 times until I got bored out of having nothing to do, engaged them and promptly got shot down). /------------------------------------------------------+------------------- | Tomi Junnila |"You're never gonna | Department of Physics @ University of Turku, Finland | die as long as | topeju@polaris.cc.utu.fi | you live." | Address: Kressunkatu 31, 20460 Turku, Finland \------------------- | Phone: +358 (9)21 247-1281 Fax/Data: +358 (9)21 247-1282 \-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- From: cisko@d0tokensun.fnal.gov (Greg Cisko) Subject: Re: 'Copter kills [ PLEASE EDIT THE BLOODY SUBJECT LINE! Does anyone have any updated > methods for knocking off helicopters in > FALCON. > Thx. Excellent question... Not getting the helo's, is what prevents me from advancing to the NEXT IA level. There is one thing that did work though. Obviously you have to kill the helo's with guns. I have only been able to do this using front view (scrolled up). This did work pretty good. [ I find them easy to kill. Either use a '120, or guns. To kill them with guns, line-up from several miles out, and blast away. I've often killed them both on the same pass. -Jeff ] Greg Cisko ------------------------------- From: "Greg Stelmack" Subject: Re: Radar Avoidance, Helicopters >Radar Avoidance: >How to do it? >I have done anything from 600-32000 feet and speeds from 250-550. The best success I've had when doing a deep strike is to fly below 500 feet on approach, popping up over the target. Anything higher subjects you to much more radar. Also, plan your route to avoid radar, don't necessarily accept the default. As an example, when flying the Israel campaign, I had to bomb a bridge near the coast. I flew out to sea, then up and across into the target. They didn't know I was there 'til after we dropped (then the SA-7 crews opened up). >Does anyone have any updated >methods for knocking off helicopters in >FALCON. Guns. Line 'em up, then give them a burst. Slow up a little on approach or you'll overshoot very easily. (To */incoming, so I don not know where it might come, if at all) [ Note: See above. --Jeff ] It is a postscript file, two pages, and is supposed to have some use when defining the enemy threat. Information from all the parts: falcon, OFT and Mig. Here is the description: (f3sheet.txt) =================================== The file F32sheet.ps is a postscript format reference sheet made for the games Falcon 3.02(.1) and Mig-29 1.01(.1). It has nothing to do with the version numbers thought. :-) It is a two page reference sheet including all the TWI codes, for planes and SAMS in the game. It has some additional information too: The weapon choice tables for different targets, as well as information about their minimum release altitudes. The information is very shorthanded, and composed ONLY from the manuals of Falcon, OFT and MIG-29. If differences were found, then the corresponding Falcon manual overruled. I have only few sources outside the games. Sometimes even the one manual data was confusing, and I had to "interpret" it. If outrageous mistakes are found, please inform me. Tommi Korhonen, k138836@cc.tut.fi ======================================= Print and enjoy. (If Jeff permits!) I could think about an ascii version also, depends on the willingness of my data chart program! Ask if you are interested of one.
