I don't agree. I have used both TSR's and had no problems installing the 3.02 => 3.02.1 or 1.00 => 1.01 patch. As the programs are TSR's not patches, they don't, to the best of my knowledge, modify the .exe files in any way. I do agree that `Stingers' patches are great though. I suggest the problem lies elsewhere, though the solution stays the same - keep a backup. My observations on Redout-Blackout: - enabled in the `CONFIG' screen (selected from the `War Room') and from version 3.02 of Falcon and version 1.0 of MiG, the G-onset `realism' has also to be set from the in-flight `Options' menu (accessed with during a flight), before G-effects are modelled. Visual blackout effects are modelled in Padlock view for both sims, but not in external view <9> (and chase view <0>?). The controls are still disabled in external view during blackout...you just get to watch yourself pile in to the ground . The following comments/suggestions apply to Network comm's mode: - Flying Falcon -vs- MiG, head-to-head, with G-onset set to moderate in both sims, the MiG pilot appears to be subject to far more active G-effect modelling than the Falcon pilot...a pretty big disadvantage. When I get the chance, I'll try and find out which Falcon G-onset level equates to the moderate level in Mig. - Different flight models can be selected on different machines, ie. one player can be in Hi-Fi, the other in Complex, the callers settings do not override the answerers in this respect. The manual recommends players use the same model, but we have used two 486DX33's and a 386DX40 in Hi-Fi with a 386SX16 in Complex, during network head-to-head and campaign play without additional problems. - With version 3.02 of Falcon, attempting to connect an Allied Mode Campaign in the Kurile Islands theatre with two players, the machines would get as far as the `Receiving Satellite Downlink' screen, then stop exchanging data, but not actually hang (indicators still spinning), and just sit doing nothing. If you experience this (it happens almost every time we try to use the Kuriles theatre - Kuwait is still by far the most reliable) try pressing once on the answerers machine...this appears to give the transmission routine a `kick' and restart data exchange, the connection was then successfully completed. This has worked on every occasion the problem was encountered. - Finally, for people who have trouble obtaining a good joystick calibration for comm's play, James "Overload" Sterrett found that if you calibrate your stick first in `Instant Action', you don't have to do it again when you go into comms. The most reliable calibration results (even with the 3.02.1 and 1.01 patch) still seem to be obtained if you hold the stick in each calibration position for a couple of seconds after hitting the button, before moving it to the next position. One less excuse for some of our head-to-head opponents . Check Six... I didn't know it was possible to make theatres. Would have thought they had to hack FALCON3.EXE or something... - -- Jason_Burrell@fcircus.sat.tx.us Sysop of South Texas Communications Research Facility. (210)681-3404 10PM-4:30PM daily. It also allows pass-through of the original COM-port functions. It lists for about $47. I pulled all of the above out of my head, based on reading a recent catalog/newszine from SH. If interest warrants I'll research all the goodies -- butI'll be out of town for a few days and wanted to get this info into your hands. --Jim "Mel" Mc. ------------------------------- From: rm09@orzspr.op.dlr.de Subject: Shaw's Bible I've been trying to get hold of a copy of Robert Shaw's much revered "The Art and Science of Air to Air Warfare" - here's the run down on availability in the UK/Europe: First Edition: "Fighter Combat: Tactics and Manouvres" Author : Robert L. Shaw ISBN : ?? Publisher : Patrick Stephens Price : ?? This was the original edition, published in the US. My local specialist bookshop said it may still be in print...perhaps someone from the other side of the pond might like to update us on the situation - a source in the US willing to deliver to Europe would be very useful. Second Edition: "The Art and Science of Air to Air Warfare" Author : Robert L. Shaw ISBN : 1-85260-201-5 Publisher : Patrick Stephens Distributor : Haynes Group Price GBP : 24.99 This was the version published in the UK. Unfortunately, it went out of print in March of this year, so is not available from the distributors. The best bet for obtaining a copy is a second hand dealer, or alternatively, you might like to try the following `booksearch' company: HP Bookfinders Tel: 0844 292083 Contact: Mr. Martin Earl I spoke with Mr. Earl and he was very helpful. He expected to be able to come up with something in around 8-10 weeks. They do charge a fee for their search service, (calculated as a percentage of the original cost of the book), but this is included in the cost if you decide to purchase, you don't have to pay it up front.
