The MiG can atempt to defeat the F-16 in two ways: energy and angles. The energy game works especially well at night (in case I hadn't mentioned, this all sort of assumes an H2H dogfight, with the only ROE being that nobody may fire before "merge"; ECM, weapons, and pre-/post- merge maneuvers are otherwise unrestricted), when your engines can allow you to rocket to 40-50K feet (outside the Falcon'sradar cone, most likely), acquire the Falcon by IR, and use boom&zoom to nail him. This is slow but usually effective, especially if care is used in the "boom" to come in in an F-16 blind spot. The "angles" game I've had work is a trifle different from the F-16's. The MiG pilot can use superior thrust to maintain speed while preventing the F-16 from getting shots (by using G as needed); eventually, the F-16 starts to turn into a beachedwhale, out of energy, and the MiG kills it. The F-16 can use low yo-yos to counter this; the MiG may be able to counter that by keeping the fight low. The MiG should AVOID a level scissors with the F-16 at all costs - the F-16's superior roll rate will spell doom for the MiG. In a vertical scissors, the F-16's worse low energy performance may allow the MiG to put nose on tail with a tailslide timed to match the F-16's stall. Controlling the MiG: DO NOT overpower your plane! Your plane will be easier to control if you carefully keep the speed below 500 knots, preferably below 450; I tend to wind up in the 350-400 range. With judicious trimming, you can still pull a lot of G - a "wrong" trim can give you a lot of "nose up" - just remember to kill it before you try to fly level. I forgot to note the rudders in the MiG's advantages... These can allow you to kick around in ways that can baffle the F-16 pilot, and can also scoot your nose over to get a lock and firing solution..... In Calgary, the MiG and the F-16 seem to have an approximate balance. This varies as new tactics are developed for each side, though. Comments? Critiques? Improvements? Write them up! I want to hear it. James Sterrett jjsterre@acs.ucalgary.ca ------------------------------- From: Richard Bookout <70720.2555@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Mig29 I have finally begun to enjoy the Mig. After many hours of struggle, it does seem to be actually flyable. But I still have questions about the aircraft. Why is the mig not FBW as is the Falcon, is it intentional for added control, etc. In the real world is the aircraft really better because of the manual control, or is it a technological problem that the mig people just couldnt get into the aircraft? I still cant control the aircraft well at low altitude, below 1000 1500 feet in the canyon in red flag is still beyond my capabilities and I'm still one notch below the realistic flight model. Seeing the contrast between the Falcon and the Mig flight models has really impressed upon me that a fighter is not a fighter is not a fighter and that diff aircraft are really different. I have a lot of other questions about the Mig, such as load capabilities, the mig seems to be extremely limited in its load vs the F15 and even the tiny Falcon. It amazes me when I load up 6 AA missiles and can get no more on the Mig, but on Falcon I can place multiple missiles on one hardpoint. Are there any good references on these aircraft that are not expensive, Coffee Table, Picture books? Maybe some text files or ref work available by FTP etc. Thanks Rick ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 4 : Issue 64 ]]
