Yup, I'm back, and the list is back to "normal". A nice smooth flight to/from Portland/San Jose. (Unusual this time of year -- PDX is usually bumpy) -Jeff -- Jeff Beadles jeff@onion.rain.com ------------------------------- From: jwthomas@audi.dazixca.ingr.com (John Thomas X6450) Subject: Sound, AOA, gear, & "Elvis Lives" Greetings again; Ok, thanks to input from several of you, I've now tweeked my joystick to where I can just about land some of the time. I'll probably still go for a new stick though. Sorry if these are questions that have been dealt with before but I've searched the USENET F3 Guide and I've only seen a few answers that didn't help with the following: 1) I don't get any engine noise except momentarily when I make a throttle change. I have just the internal PC speaker. Shouldn't I be getting some background engine noises? I do get "waypoint", "caution", etc messages. I've tried letting the intro sequence complete; , ; set the radio messages to "NONE" with the PC speaker setting in the config setup - all per suggestions in the guide, but nothing seems to help. 2)The upper \/ in the AOA indicator to the left of the HUD never comes on - the O and the /\ do!?! 3) I can't get the gear to retract when I abort a landing. 4) A few miles to the SW of Nellis there's 200'(?) high white "ELVIS LIVES" continually moving across the sky, about 500' off the ground. Ah, is this normal?... Again, I just bought the 3.0D version and have it on a 486/33, with 16MB RAM, with most everything loaded high, resulting in ~624kb of mem. ------------------------------- From: knutson@mcc.com (Jim Knutson) Subject: Re: Sound, AOA, gear, & "Elvis Lives" > 2)The upper \/ in the AOA indicator to the left of the HUD never comes > on - the O and the /\ do!?! The AOA indicator lights show 5 five AOA zones. The arrows indicate either what you should do with the nose, or your current speed. I.e. ^ - pull nose up, slow down you're too fast ^ o - better, try nose up some more o - on speed o - your a bit slow, drop your nose v v - to slow, drop nose, add power. Of course, only you can guage whether you should be changing your power setting or adjusting your pitch. It's going to depend where you are on the glide path and your relative motion to it (are you getting closer, moving away, or staying the same?). Dropping the nose will increase your speed AND your sink rate. Raising it will lower your speed and decrease your sink rate. Changing engine speed does the same thing. The correct way to land is to find the right AOA and then use engine speed to adjust your sink rate. Of course, when you change your engine speed (and hence your aircraft speed), the AOA will change and you need to adjust pitch to maintain the correct AOA. It takes a lot of practice to get it right. I might add that trying to adjust your landing speed using the keyboard controls is almost an impossible task. The Thrustmaster WCS is excellent for the fine engine control necessary for good landings. I would assume the throttle wheel on the CH Flightstick would be good too, but I've never tried that. > 3) I can't get the gear to retract when I abort a landing. Given your statement above about seeing the ^ AOA light, I'd say you are dropping your gear at too high a speed (or accelerating too much after dropping them) and they get damaged. You should not drop your gear unless you're under 300 kts. I usually drop them on the turn to final at around 250 kts. > 4) A few miles to the SW of Nellis there's 200'(?) high white "ELVIS LIVES" > continually moving across the sky, about 500' off the ground. Ah, is > this normal?... Nice scrolling light sign, eh? You'll find other goodies like that scattered here and there if you go exploring. There's also a collection of pictures of these things on onion.rain.com. I have a gateway 486/33 with ati greahics ultra pro, I could run Falcon 3.0 fine up to patch D. Now I have applied OFT and` Falcon no longer works. I am using qemm and I have more than enought memory 637,??? bytes of mem free. I have also called SH and the said try excluding memory with qemm. I tried FR= E000 RAM X=B000-B7FF ON but still nothing. Even replaced E000 with D000. It still does the same thing. I type falcon3 and the hard drive goes on for a second then HANG. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Del will work I have to hit the reset button. Anyone got any solutions??? I hope!! ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 2 : Issue 73 ]]
