I liked the head-to-head, but it seemed as if there was a little weirdness. My opponent believes he blew up about 40 seconds or so after the initial head-on pass. I had locked and fired well before we passed, but the missle missed (from my point of view), and I find it hard to believe that it pulled a U turn :-). It was an AMRAAM, btw. So, is there a known but (bug) that might cause people to just blow up in the modem game? (And no fair saying "natural causes" :-). As to how we did, well, I think we both forgot nearly everything. I found that fighting out of the cockpit was useless, and ended up in the padlock view, trying to determine my orientation and pulling out at about 50 feet. My opponent bellied in once and blew up once. We only launched one missle between us. It was definitely more tense. As for the fly together mode, it took *forever* to set up over a 2400 baud link. Then I blew the takeoff and got to watch the mission with the wingman views :-(. Oh well. Oh yeah, we were both in OFT, but I had the .1 upgrade and he didn't, if that matters. David Pipes robear@digex.com ------------------------------- From: masten@beta.lanl.gov (David A. Instead, like the >real-world system being modelled (sorry, I don't have the designation >in front of me), the ECM pod focuses on a single radar at a time. >When the pod is satisified that that lock is broken (as indicated >by the TWI), the pod focuses attention on the next radar, and so >forth. Interesting stuff Tom. Along similar lines, I was wondering if their is any downside to using ECM (in the game, not real life). I'm sure it says somewhere in the manual that using ECM broadcasts your presence (if not position?) to the world. But when enemy planes use their ECM, they (usually) just disappear from my scope. No TWI indication, no nothing. Is this a case where you shouldn't continually use it, but everyone else in the game has the advantage? How would I know if a plane is using ECM anyway (except when I lose lock)? On the subject of radar, I presume you wouldn't see an enemy, or friendly plane's radar if it is on, but not pointed in your general direction. Can you see an enemy's radar if it is just in search mode as opposed to tracking you? Is that what is happening when it momentarily displayed on your TWI? Or is he just turning the radar on/off? One thing I noted is that neither enemies or friendlies tend to paint you (in RF) if you are within padlock visual range (~5 miles). When you get outside this range, you get the TWI blip. But, that might have just been the particular situation I set up. Last, but not least, do the different radar types really make a difference in the game? A type 4 radar is supposed to be only search, if I remember correctly. And I know it shows up on the TWI. Note that all the radars of the new OFT planes disagree with the manual. One especially bad case is giving the Jaguar a type 1 radar, not bad for an attack plane! Wondering if this matters game wise. If I get a chance, and figure out where the ftpsite on onion.rain.com is, I'll upload it there. But its definitely in the above location. Dave Masten ------------------------------- From: Robert Schwartz Subject: f3mapr and falcnr for 3.01.01? Are the f3mapr.exe and falcnr.zip versions on onion.rain.com the correct versions for 3.01.01? If not what version are they for and where could I find the versions (if they exist) for 3.01.01? Any help would be appreciated. Bob Schwartz Thinking Machines Corp. Here's the summary: This is being put together by Mike Drake, with the support of Intercept Magazine, several of the Falcon 3.0 beta testers (including myself), and fighter pilot Pete Bonanni, among others. Each squadron will have a CO and a package of documentation which is modelled after actual USAF training documentation. Squadrons will be formed in local areas, and pilots will practice against each other. At some interval, inter-squadron tournaments (ala William Tell and Gunsmoke) will be held where your squadron will actually compete against others across the USA (world??). There is no fees associated with this. Mike is simply trying to put together a network of F3 players. Anyone interested should call 1-800-AIR-ACES to join. THis number will route directly to Mike's home answering machine, so please leave your name and number, and mention that you read my posting here. Mike is currently looking for people to join sqds and to form/lead them. Mike maintains the overall database and will put you in contact with others in your local calling area. The goal here is to have fun. The more who join, the more fun we can have, both in local H2H "practices" and in larger tournements.
