At first I thought is was just random numbers, couldn't be more fair than that. Now I'm not so sure. Last weekend, I spend several hours playing it, and after a few rounds, decided to see what would happen if I set the config to be real easy. I changed enemy skill from vetran to trainee, and SAM/AAA from recruit to null. First round on that setting, I took care of the 1st 5 a/c as usual, then headed down to hunt for ground targets. Without any ground fire, it was a turkey shoot. Not only no ground fire, it seems that the trainees don't try to defend their turf, and pretty much leave you alone when you're pounding the ground. I would have to turn radar up to 40 miles just to see anybody. On it went, me toasting a few tanks, then picking some air targets, killing them, then back to the tanks and stuff. On and on, till I finally landed without gear by accident, with only slight damage... The score was >400,000. After a few more shorter rounds, I got into the same gambit again, this time flying for over an hour. Finally I escaped and ended the mission. The score was 5 (five) points! Was it because I quit before I died, or because I shot the guys in the parachutes? I've been coding high scores, keeping track of kills, trying to find the key to high scores. Missles that miss lower it, but by how much? My highest score is ~650,000 with 15 planes, 12 shilkas, and 0 missles shown on the scorecard. The ~400,000 flight killed 15/12/29. The higher score was against vetrans and lite groundfire. I'm starting to think that the best way to get a high IA score is to work *fast*... and I should start recording times and difficulty settings just to see. Comments? -longjohn ------------------------------- From: Cedric Sims Subject: Return to base Another tale of OFT woes... After a beautiful mission I returned to base with my 3 wingmen. I touched down first and my wingmen followed in formation. I don't know how, but when the pilot in the rear landed, his plane jumped up about 10ft and crashed, sliding forward and wrecking into the plane in front of him. I lost 2 FSX's and 1 pilot (the other is injured). So, has anyone else experienced anything like this? It is sooooo frustrating to complete a mission, and then lose pilots and planes just trying to land! ARGH! Smythe" Subject: Falcon3 lockups As to you're Falcon lockups. I don't have OFT, but I can tell you something about Falcon 3.0. I seem to remember somewhere (again, I can't be sure), that if you have an AMI BIOS, and a Logitech mouse, you should disable your shadow RAM. Or... disable your shadow RAM period. Heh, it's been so long ago, I can't remember. But you might try it. E=-Ean=- ------------------------------- From: pacdata!jimh@UCSD.EDU (Jim Harkins) Subject: IA scores, opening sequence As for the opening sequence, maybe 1/5 of the time will the two jets come swooping out of the sky. Typically the machine just locks. I hit escape as soon as the screen appears and all works well. This is on a 50 Mhz 486 with 16 meg RAM, a soundblaster, and OS/2. As for instant action, last night the phone rang just as I fired it up. Instead of pausing the game I put it on Auto. Damn! The phone call lasted 20 minutes, I let the thing go and it racked up a score of over 600k in about 2 hours. Pretty amazing to watch, actually. jim "Watch my 6 hell, I've got enough trouble watching my 12 :-)" ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 1 : Issue 15 ]]
